  • Wandering on over to the multiplex for my top 5 holiday movies!

  • General
  • Besides traveling the world and coaxing my colleagues to talk about their work on camera, I love movies. But, you've probably already figured that out if you've been reading my blog for the last few years.

In December, there is a specific genre that appeals to me as I flip though the channels or visit the theaters: The Holiday Movie.

Holiday movies  are often travel-themed as well, which makes them extra fun, so let's discuss my five favorite holiday movies.

Warning: This is not a standard holiday movie list. Prepare to have your sleigh bells rocked! [more]

  • When wandering, lead with your stomach.

  • General
  • I told the taxi driver, “Do not take me anywhere that serves nachos. Doing so would not be wise.” At least, that’s what I think I said because my Spanish is less than stellar. I was in Cozumel and I did not want to eat where everyone else on my cruise ship was going. I love a good tropical adult beverage and greasy, cheesy, imitation Mexican food as much as the next guy, but I wanted the real thing and this was my chance. I wanted to eat where the locals eat. I dreamt of delicious, authentic tacos al pastor with fresh meat shaved off the spit with a frighteningly large sword. I wanted to taste dishes the way they’re supposed to taste. I wanted real Mexican cuisine!

Sometimes things are too real. [more]

  • Go eco with these 5 school supplies

  • Going Green
    Amadeus e-University
  • It's hard to believe those of us with children will soon have to buy supplies for the next school year. This year, how about making an effort to help the environment by purchasing supplies made from post-consumer waste and recycled fibers? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported in their 2009 Facts and Figures that 35 to 45% of municipal solid waste (things we commonly use then throw away) comes from commercial and institutional locations, such as businesses, hospitals and schools. The good news is since 1980, the recycling rate has increased and disposal of waste in landfills has decreased. The bad news is landfill waste was still as high as 54.3% in 2009. By buying ecofriendly school supplies, you can help reduce the amount of waste in landfills. Start with these school supplies: [read more]

  • I Wander -- San Diego

  • General
  •

This is the week. The week in which coolness, nerdness, compulsiveness, and excess all explode within a few square blocks of downtown San Diego. The San Diego Comic-Con is not for the meek and never will you find a greater hive of scum and faux villainy in your life. Imagine 130,000 people—some in colorful and elaborate costumes—invading your downtown area to learn about the latest movies, TV shows and games, meet actors, directors, and creators from all kinds of media, buy books, comic books, games, toys, and endure a multi-sensory assault that cannot be imagined; unless you see it for yourself, of course.

When I’m away and stay in a hotel, I like to stay in properties that offer specific facilities and amenities to make my stay more enjoyable, relaxing, and comfortable. Occasionally, I even travel with my four legged best friend Gypsy. Did you know that some really nice hotels are actually pet-friendly? It’s become very popular in the last couple of years and what a great alternative to leaving your pet in a kennel.

  • Amadeus e-University

  • Let me try to take you back to your childhood. Strangely enough, though, I don’t want to take you back to fun, sweet memories. I want you to imagine yourself as a six-year old child in a family living on less than $US2 a day and in slum conditions. You’re part of the 50% of the people in a capital city without access to a latrine. You’re part of the two-thirds of the people without access to tap water. You’re not growing up learning or reading, playing with toys or friends from school. You don’t have a school to go to. You grow up trying to survive. And you do. You survive the worst earthquake in 200 years—and lose everyone in your family. But you're given hope. [read more]

  • Wandering around Spain without an air conditioner

  • Hotels
  • Barcelona -- I knew it was going to be bad when the front desk told me, “It’s not that the air conditioner is broken, it’s just that it works very softly.”

Not that I’m a spoiled traveler, mind you. I’d just come off a week in southern France in which I camped outside medieval cities, kayaked through towering canyons, and ate and drank my way to a future liver transplant. It’s all about timing and circumstance.

I wasn’t supposed to be there, first of all. If not for the unexpected separation of my parents, I would’ve been home enjoying some free time with friends after my return from France. Instead I accompanied my mom and other family members on this grand tour of southern Spain to salvage a long planned vacation that also included a 12 day Mediterranean cruise. This would’ve been quite the score under normal circumstances but I’ll just say that traveling with someone who’s in the middle of grieving, no longer wanted to be there, and, understandably, found it difficult to enjoy anything they were experiencing isn’t easy. • Every Travel Agent Needs to Know How to Mind Their P's and Q's!

  • Queues
    Customer Profiles
  • There are a few ideas on where the old adage, "mind your P's and Q's," comes from but the most commonly accepted stories have to do with old printing presses and beer. There was a time when each letter had to be manually placed in a printing press and they had to be in reverse. Imagine the potential confusion when setting lowercase p's and q's! So "mind your P's and Q's" was a reminder to the typesetters to take care when setting these letters.

Also, bartenders in English pubs of the seventeenth centurywould keep a watch on how many pints and quarts their patrons drank so they would know how much to charge. "Mind your P's and Q's" became a necessary reminder to keep track of how much one has consumed!

No matter which origin you prefer, the saying has come to mean that you should be mindful of the details; like your customer's travel details and your agency tasks.  [more]

  • Scheduled Forums that won't bust your schedule!

  • Training Forums
  • If you remember my last blog article, you'll know that I'm a big fan of forums. I've been using them since before Apple was cool. I visit forums almost every day to catch up on news and peruse community discussions on topics of utmost importance. You know, stuff like movies, travel, and hobbies. I'm almost ashamed to admit that I'm more apt to ask a question in a forum than I am to do a Google query. I'm not sure I understand why but there is something to be said about community knowledge as opposed to "Google knowledge." Some subjects don't have a comprehensive virtual trail to follow. Sometimes you just have to ask someone because, after all, there is a difference between knowledge and wisdom, right?

That's what our Amadeus e-University Scheduled Forums are all about. If you haven't seen the schedule or participated in a forum yet, the Scheduled Forums all focus on one subject of high interest and is open for 2 hours. Each forum is moderated by an instructor that is ready to answer all of your questions for the allotted time. Wisdom at your fingertips! You don't have to stress that you have to be there for all 2 hours though. Scheduled Forums aren't about monopolizing your time like a class would. If we're having a scheduled forum for a subject that interests you, make sure to pop in at some point to ask your question and then keep on working. You can then check back later for the instructor's response. While the forum is only open for posting for 2 hours, all of the questions and responses will be available indefinitely to browse.
