Barcelona -- I knew it was going to be bad when the front desk told me, “It’s not that the air conditioner is broken, it’s just that it works very softly.”
Not that I’m a spoiled traveler, mind you. I’d just come off a week in southern France in which I camped outside medieval cities, kayaked through towering canyons, and ate and drank my way to a future liver transplant. It’s all about timing and circumstance.
I wasn’t supposed to be there, first of all. If not for the unexpected separation of my parents, I would’ve been home enjoying some free time with friends after my return from France. Instead I accompanied my mom and other family members on this grand tour of southern Spain to salvage a long planned vacation that also included a 12 day Mediterranean cruise. This would’ve been quite the score under normal circumstances but I’ll just say that traveling with someone who’s in the middle of grieving, no longer wanted to be there, and, understandably, found it difficult to enjoy anything they were experiencing isn’t easy.
